May 25, 2016 Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement today through his spokesperson expressing deep concern over reports that the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the country¡¯s electoral process in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has caused the country¡¯s political situation to become increasingly tense.
In his statement on the 25th, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on all Congolese (Kinshasa) political parties to strictly respect the basic freedoms and rights protected by the country¡¯s constitution, and urged all parties to exercise restraint and express their opinions in a peaceful manner, including The upcoming protests will be held on the 26th of this month.
Ban Ki-moon urged all political parties in the DRC to participate constructively in a meaningful political dialogue aimed at peacefully resolving their differences and place the country¡¯s national interests above personal interests. He urged the parties to cooperate fully with Edem Kodjo, the AU coordinator who promoted the national dialogue in Congo (DRC), and reiterated that the United Nations will fully support this effort.
Earlier this year, Congo (Kinshasa) President Kabila tried to extend his term by amending the presidential election law, leading to strong opposition from opposition parties in the country and launching several protests. The opposition parties announced that they will hold another national demonstration on May 26.
